Amidst the negative things going on in our world (JD got a ticket yesterday for driving the wrong way down a one-way street (he was mixed up from a detour and got lost), and today he hit a car while he was backing up out of a parking space (everyone is fine, just cosmetic damage to the other guy's car)), some good things are actually going on.
I've been concerned about the number of vials of donor s.pe.rm that we have stored up. This concern has only increased with the miscarriage. DS is a commodity and our donor is a very, very hot commodity. Since we do back-to-back IUIs, we'll use 2 vials in every cycle, successful or not. When you would like more than 1 kid and don't know how many cycles it will take to get those kids, you want to store as many vials as you possibly can.
Today, we got a call from the bank that they were offering 5 (!) vials of our preferred type (they come in 3 types: ICI, IUI and IVF; our clinic prefers ICI, i.e., unwashed samples). That's the most they've ever offered us and I'm so excited! Luckily and gratefully, we were able to buy them all.*
We now have 10 vials in our stockpile and I feel like this is a good number to have. That with 10 vials, I can relax and trust that JD and I will be able to have the family that we've dreamed of for so long.
*Our bank offers a buyback provision of 50% back for vials that haven't left their storage facility. So, if we ultimately decide not to use some of the vials, we won't be out for all the money we paid.

That's great, Jendeis! It is a sticky situation trying to make sure that you have the number of samples you want while not tying up all your savings by investing only in sperm! We have 4 more samples of our donor here at our clinic, and I keep forgetting to talk to the bank to find out what the process is once we have this baby - I seem to remember something about them keeping back a number of samples there for families who already have one child from a particular donor, but I forget how it works.
10 vials is a good number.
Sounds like a great number of vials!
And sorry about JD's ticket--I drove down the wrong way once, and now Im so careful about it--it can be tricky!
That is great! I know women that did not get extras and end up really regretting it.
We are doing back to backs as well. I bought six for our first try, and now I'm worried about exactly what Anna Said. I want to buy at least four more but I don't want all our money tied up in the cryo industry...
UGH. I think I better call my bank.
Wow - there's another aspect about donor sperm that I've never actually considered before. Of course I know that you buy several vials at once for the current attempt (and repeat cycles if necessary), but I never thought about the angle of wanting to buy as much as possible for future siblings.
I think I've learned more about the donor sperm process more from your words than from anyone else's!
Sounds like a plan! Glad it worked out...
By the way, my wordle is "TAXED", which brought up a question.
Are you taxed for donor sperm?
Glad you've got some things going your way!
Bummer about the ticket. There are a few streets in rosslyn that always confuse me. I've gone the wrong way down them by accident before. Thankfully I've never gotten a ticket...just a few rude but deserved gestures!
LOL. I am crackin' up over Annacyclopedia's comment "sticky situation". I am sure she didn't mean it that way...but I am SO EASILY cracked up these days. :)
Sorry about the tickets and the fender bender. That sucks.
YEAH on the donor sperm stockpile AND it basically going to be one off on the ones you don't use. WOO HOO!! I bet that is such a sigh of relief. FINALLY!!
That is awesome! I do think it's better to have extra than regret not having them.
Fantastic. I'm glad you were able to get some extra vials. I know a couple who are now running low on vials trying for their second and it's stressful. Hopefully you will have plenty left over for baby number 2.
Glad something good is in the air! Or... in the vial. lol!
Am dork, I know.
:)
Sorry for JD's bad luck but so glad you have a good stockpile! Let's hope you have no need for all those vials!
Awesome news about the ds!
Great news!
Huh! I woulda never thought of them calling for spare vials - that's cool! Particularly re the payback thing too.
That's awesome that you got all of the safety net there. Sucks to the ticket though.
With so many things along this journey outside our control, it's nice to have a bit of a back-up plan/cushion.
Dude. Stockpiling sperm. Pretty trippy!
